ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Christchurch Uncovered is an online exhibition counterpart to the in person exhibition at South Library for the Christchurch Heritage Festival 2021. It explores artefacts from around Christchurch unearthed by Underground Overground Archaeology, a Christchurch-based archaeology firm. This exhibition explores themes of colonialism, cultural appropriation and cultural exchange. Each object reveals an aspect of the everyday lives of 19th century Cantabrians and gives a glimpse into our city's rich heritage.

This exhibition has been curated by Alethea Chai. Alethea has spent the latter half of 2021 carrying out an internship with Underground Overground Archaeology, focusing on public archaeology. She is undertaking her Masters in History at the University of Canterbury, and has an interest in material culture and the ways tangible traces of our ancestors' past can speak to us in a way that can enrich our understanding of the present.
